About the Exam

What is a carotid ultrasound?

A carotid duplex uses B-mode imaging, color Doppler, and spectral Doppler to examine the arteries in the neck and measure blood-flow patterns.

What happens during the exam?

A credentialed technologist applies ultrasound gel and gently moves the transducer along the neck to image the carotid arteries, using B-mode imaging alongside color and spectral Doppler to evaluate blood flow.

Gel & positioning

Ultrasound gel is applied and you're positioned comfortably for imaging of the neck.

B-mode imaging

The technologist images the carotid arteries to assess vessel walls and look for plaque or narrowing.

Doppler flow assessment

Color and spectral Doppler measure blood-flow velocities through the carotid circulation.
