FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a kidney ultrasound the same as a renal artery Doppler?

No. A kidney ultrasound evaluates kidney anatomy; a renal artery Doppler is a vascular study focused on blood flow in the arteries supplying the kidneys.

Does it use radiation?

No. Ultrasound uses sound waves.

Do I need a full bladder?

Yes, a full bladder is usually required for a kidney and lower urinary tract (renal/bladder) ultrasound. The bladder must be full to evaluate its wall and contents. A full bladder acts as an "acoustic window" that helps the sonographer see the lower parts of the urinary tract and surrounding pelvic structures more clearly.

You may be asked to empty your bladder partway through or at the end to check post-void residual volume.

Can ultrasound find kidney stones?

Ultrasound may identify some stones and signs of urinary obstruction, but the best imaging test depends on the clinical situation.

How long does it take?

Typically 45 minutes.

Do I need an order?

Policy varies by insurance-billed versus self-pay testing: you don't need a physician order if you're self-pay testing, you'll need an order if you go through insurance, with appropriate CPT code and symptomatology ICD 10 code
